Subscriptions leak money because they're invisible. They don't feel "expensive" — until you add them up. VaultRule fixes that by forcing a simple decision: keep it on purpose (and route it correctly) or cancel it.
If you're new, do the base setup first: Start Here or Set Up VaultRule in 15 Minutes.
The rule (don't overthink it)
A subscription is only a "bill" if you actively choose to keep paying it and it's required. If it's optional or entertainment, it belongs in Flow. Use these to make clean decisions: Vault vs Flow: What Counts as a Bill, Bills vs Spending, and Gray Zone Expenses.
The 20-minute Subscription Sweep
- Pull the list: check your last 60–90 days of bank and card transactions. Write every recurring charge — monthly, annual, free trials. Include app stores (Apple/Google), streaming, memberships, software, and "pro" plans.
- Sort into three buckets: Keep (Vault), Keep (Flow), Cancel.
- Route "Keep (Vault)" correctly: pay from your bills setup and automate it. If you haven't set up payday automation yet: Automate VaultRule on Payday.
- Route "Keep (Flow)" correctly: make sure Flow covers them. If Flow is tight, it's a pause/cancel candidate. Set a realistic cap: How to Set Your Flow Limit.
- Cancel the rest: cancel immediately. Do one follow-up check in 7 days to confirm no surprise renewals appear.
Decision table (fast and practical)
| If the subscription is… | Put it in… | What you do next |
|---|---|---|
| Required to keep life running (insurance, essential utilities-related, required software) | Vault | Automate and include in your bill routine |
| Optional but you truly use it (music, streaming, apps, memberships) | Flow | Keep only if it fits your Flow cap |
| Useful but cheaper as annual | Flow or Vault | Annualize only if stable and you're sure you'll keep it |
| "I forgot this exists" | Cancel | Cancel now, re-buy later if needed |
Update VaultRule after the sweep
If a subscription is Vault
Add it to your monthly Vault number and recalculate your target: How to Calculate Your Vault Amount. Then update your payday transfer so Vault stays fully funded.
If a subscription is Flow
It must fit inside your Flow limit. If it doesn't fit, it's a cancel candidate — not a reason to raise Flow. Set subscriptions to autopay from the correct account so they never mix with Vault.
Cancel message (copy and use this)
Hi, please cancel my subscription effective immediately. Please confirm the cancellation date and that I will not be charged again. Thank you.
