Bill amounts change. The mistake is pretending they don’t — and then wondering why Vault is “too low.” VaultRule fixes this with a quick update loop you run the moment you get a notice.
If you’re new to VaultRule, start here: Start Here or Set Up VaultRule in 15 Minutes.
The rule
If a bill changes, update your Vault target the same day. No waiting, no mental math.
If you’re unsure what counts as a bill, use: Vault vs Flow: What Counts as a Bill.
The 5-minute fix (do this now)
- Confirm the new amount (email/app notice).
- Update your monthly Vault total (old amount → new amount).
- Recalculate your Vault target once: How to Calculate Your Vault Amount.
- Adjust your payday automation so the money is there automatically: Automate VaultRule on Payday.
- Add/verify alerts so you catch future changes early: VaultRule Alerts & Guardrails.
What changes mean (quick guide)
| If the bill… | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Increases | Raise Vault target + raise payday transfer | Prevents overdraft and late fees |
| Decreases | Lower Vault target OR keep the difference as a buffer | Stops “extra money” from drifting into spending |
| Becomes irregular/annual | Add it to your list and plan it once | Prevents “surprise” renewals |
For irregular/annual items, use: Annual Bills Checklist.
If the change hits before payday
Do not “wing it.” Run your normal bill routine, then top up Vault immediately if needed. Use this routine to stay consistent: VaultRule Bill Pay Checklist.
