Weekly paychecks are great — until your bills are monthly and your money drifts into daily spending. VaultRule solves this by turning each weekly paycheck into a mini "payday routine": Vault gets funded first, then you get a weekly Flow allowance.
If you're new to the system, start here: Start Here or Set Up VaultRule in 15 Minutes.
The weekly-paycheck rule
Every week: fund Vault first, then release a weekly Flow allowance.
This is the same core system, just sliced into weekly steps: Two-Account System Stops Overspending.
Setup in 15 minutes
- Calculate your monthly Vault target (all bills + any predictable irregular costs). Use: How to Calculate Your Vault Amount.
- Convert monthly Vault to a weekly transfer amount. Pick one method and keep it consistent:
- Simple method: Monthly Vault ÷ 4 (easy, close enough for most people)
- More accurate method: Monthly Vault × 12 ÷ 52 (best if your numbers are tight)
- Automate a weekly transfer into Vault the day you get paid. Guide: Automate VaultRule on Payday.
- Set a weekly Flow allowance. Convert your monthly Flow limit the same way (÷ 4 or × 12 ÷ 52). Guide: How to Set Your Flow Limit.
What to do on each weekly payday (3 moves)
| Every payday (weekly) | Action |
|---|---|
| Move 1 | Weekly Vault transfer runs automatically |
| Move 2 | Weekly Flow allowance released — this is what you spend until next paycheck |
| Move 3 | Leave the remainder in place (Vault stability first) |
For a ready-made transfer structure, use: VaultRule Automation Templates.
Paying monthly bills from weekly income
Most bills are still monthly — that's fine. The whole point is that Vault quietly fills every week so bill day is boring. Put monthly bills on autopay from Vault and keep bill dates organised so nothing surprises you. Checklist: VaultRule Bill-Pay Checklist.
The "5th paycheck" month (what to do)
Some months you get an extra weekly paycheck. VaultRule keeps it boring:
- First: keep your weekly Vault funding exactly the same — consistency wins.
- Second: use the extra paycheck to pre-fund predictable irregular costs: Annual Bills Checklist.
- Optional: after Vault is safe, add a controlled Flow treat — without changing your weekly baseline.
If Flow runs out mid-week
Don't "fix" it with credit. Treat it as a signal — your Flow limit is either too high early or too low overall. Stop discretionary spending until the next weekly transfer.
